Living Room Mood Board with Mid Century Flair
Creating a living room mood board has not been an easy task. It’s the first room you see when you walk in the front door. It’s the room that we will likely use most often. And it only has 1 wall. I love the openness and the picture window, but designing an open concept room is new for me! All of my apartments had enclosed rooms, most of which were small. This room isn’t exactly palatial, but it’s much bigger than any of my apartment living spaces. So I’m attempting a living room mood board to get all my design thoughts in order.
The couch is the only decision we have made for this room so far. We had small couches prior to moving and it will be such a treat to sit on a big couch together for movies! While a sectional will take up the majority of the space in this room, it will also work as a nice room divider between the living and dining rooms.
Picking a paint color for the living and dining rooms is going to be SO hard. I love color, but it is such a large room and there will be so many elements that need to tie together, that it might be a better choice to go with a neutral. Luckily the walls are freshly painted in a blueish grey color- AKA the color that every seller paints a house. It’s boring, but it’s clean and neutral, and we can definitely live with it while we decide on a paint color. It will also give us a chance to pick any fabric we want for pillows and curtains. I personally think it’s less expensive and easier to repaint a room than it is to choose new window treatments!
Now that we’ve talked about the more permanent elements of the room, let’s get to the fun part – décor items!! A few months ago I picked up two gorgeous barrel back cane chairs from Letgo. I’m still in the process of reupholstering them, but here is a picture-
These will be part of the living room in some way. I am also thinking about the possibility of Colin creating built-in shelves around the TV. I’m not a fan of a TV being the focal point of a room, so the built-ins would be a nice distraction from the screen. Shout out to Colin for being skilled at wood-working! You’re the best!
If we do a neutral paint color, I want to bring some color in through curtains and throw pillows. Have any of you worked with a picture window before? My current thought is that we will use blinds for the window and the curtains will be more for show. Otherwise we would need extra wide curtains…does such a thing even exist? My guess is no, but hook me up if I’m wrong! Either way, pretty curtains and pillows will be happening because we don’t have a lot of space for colorful art on the walls.
Overall, this living room mood board is meant to be warm and inviting. It will be a little bit mid-century in keeping with the age of the house, but I don’t want to commit to any one “theme.” We will let each step happen organically and see how the room turns out. I’m imagining cozy movie nights in the winter, board game nights with friends, and setting up our first Christmas in this room. It all makes me so happy! Now please excuse me, I have some paint colors to test!
