Spooky Halloween Sign

This Spooky Halloween Sign project comes directly from Birds and Soap because sometimes a project is so good you just have to copy it!

Birds and Soap Version

The directions from Birds and Soap suggest using stencils and printed fonts from the internet. That would probably be the easier method, but because I don’t always read directions, I chose to free hand the whole thing. The whole project took about 8 hours between cutting the wood, spray painting the pieces, letting them dry, and then painting the details. Pretty time consuming, but SO worth it. I made this sign three years ago and it is still one of my favorite DIY’s to date.

Because this was made three years ago and I had no idea I would ever have a blog, there are not many how-to pictures to accompany this post. Sorry! You can pop on over to Birds and Soap for a detailed how-to. If you’re like me and don’t bother with all the directions, read on friend!

Spooky Halloween Sign Supplies:
2×2 wood pole
1×4 scrap wood
jigsaw
sandpaper (I skipped this step and get splinters taking it out of storage each year, don’t be like me)
black spray paint
craft paint in assorted colors
paintbrushes
nails
hammer

Steps:
1. Using a jigsaw, cut jagged edges on both sides of your 5 pieces of 1×4 scrap wood
2. Sand down all edges of the pieces
3. Arrange the signs on the 2×2 wood pole and cut the pole to the length you want it
4. Spray paint all the pieces, including the pole (you’ll need multiple coats!)

Spray Paint Pieces

5. Patiently wait for the paint to dry. V. important
6. Here’s the part where you might want to head over to the other blog to see how to stencil the words and details!
7. If you’re free handing, use various colors to paint the background for each piece
8. When the background is dry, use a different color to write the name of each place on the pieces
9. Nail the pieces onto the 2×2 pole
10. Make everyone jealous with your awesome new Spooky Halloween Sign

Halloween Sign

I don’t have a yard or front porch for this sign, but it still looks super cute indoors! Just arrange some pumpkins, skulls, and leaves around it. This year I may change “Elm Street” to “Transylvania”, but otherwise this DIY is just perfect! Have fun making your sign!
