Custom Mid Century Vanity

one room challenge

It’s week 6 of the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge and we are a solid week behind schedule. This week was supposed to be focused on tile, but instead I’m going to share our plans for a custom mid century vanity. Our tile is unfortunately still in a warehouse somewhere with an unknown ship date and we can’t install the vanity until the tile is set. However, we do have a good idea of what it will look like. Hint hint- we might have created a similar one for our first ORC! With fingers and toes crossed for the tile delivery, let’s talk about our custom mid century vanity template.

Since the vanity is technically not built yet, I’m going to share why we decided to go the custom route and what the future vanity might look like. Colin will eventually share the actual plans, as well as a how-to for anyone hoping to build their own custom mid century vanity. The main reason we are building our vanity is that the bathroom is quite small and it was hard to find one that fit the space. This may come as a shock to you, but I am also quite picky. I couldn’t find a vanity in our price point that I liked. My vision was something close to what the original vanity looked like, but that is just not available in the market today. Luckily I married a woodworker who loves a challenge 🙂

pink bathroom budget makeover

The original vanity was so perfect for the space, but it was made of particle board that had become moldy and chipped. We did save the hardware to use for the new vanity! For those who have been around for a while, you might remember that Colin built the vanity in our en suite bathroom. The vanity for the pink bathroom is going to be very similar, but it will not be floating. Below is an image of the other gorgeous vanity he built. I love it as much today as the day we installed it, plus it feels good to know that we paid tribute to the original design.

Besides the fact that the pink bathroom vanity will not be floating, we are also planning to use a custom countertop. This is still a big if, but we would potentially like to undermount the old pink sink to a piece of remnant stone. Colin will cut the pink sink to fit the new plumbing and then we will attach the sink using sink clips. We are currently trying to find a stone fabricator who will work with us on this project, but if it works out, it would be a dream! The backup plan is to use a new under-mount sink.

I apologize for the lack of real content this week. We (mostly Colin) have been working as quickly as possible to get this bathroom done, but we are at the mercy of shipping delays and others’ time. The new plan is to build the vanity and finish the drywall this weekend, then tile next weekend. Everything moves super fast once the tile is done, so there is a chance we will still finish on time.
