Fall ORC Week 4 Bloody Fingers!

After a very uneventful week 3, I am happy to report that our One Room Challenge is back on track…kind of. On the bright side, we made it to week 4 and our stuff’s here. On a less exciting note, Colin got bit by the router while he was making our nightstands. He has 12 stitches between his pointer finger and thumb on his right hand. Gnarly. So unless he can coach me through the woodworking, there is a chance we won’t have a finished headboard and nightstands before November 12th. And that’s ok! We are just happy that the injury was not worse. Plus he really timed these bloody fingers well with Halloween this week!

Would it have been easier to buy a new headboard and nightstands or find them used from Facebook marketplace? Yes. But when we moved into our new house we decided that having a custom headboard would be really special. Colin is also an excellent woodworker (when he isn’t chopping up his fingers) and building a headboard is an exciting new venture for him. Originally I had planned to find nightstands secondhand, but after months of looking I haven’t found much. Chicago’s secondhand furniture market is INSANE. Items get snatched up within minutes of being posted.

Part of the reason I haven’t been able to find nightstands is because I fell in love with a set that had already been sold. Not only were they were gorgeous and perfect, but they were also made by Marshall Fields. For those who are unfamiliar, Marshall Fields was a wonderful department store in Chicago that was purchased and ruined by Macy’s in 2004. The flagship store still has some Marshall Fields flare, but overall, the store went downhill after it was bought by Macy’s. When I showed the nightstands to Colin, he of course said he would make them. Because he’s the best. So when his hand heals, we will have the next best thing to original Mashall Field’s furniture 🙂 Below is the picture we are modeling the nightstands off of.

Best of luck to everyone participating in the One Room Challenge this Fall. Two weeks to go! Hopefully we can get through this to do list before then! Should Colin use his bloody fingers to scare the trick-or-treaters on Saturday? I vote yes!
