Living Room Makeover for Fall
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here! The One Room Challenge tired us out and we have been enjoying summer as much as possible! Thank you for sticking with us and coming back to read the blog. Today I’m going to share our plans for a living room makeover for Fall. This is not going to be a huge renovation project by any means, but we hope that it still makes a big impact! The living room has been looking more and more sad as we complete every other room. We spend a lot of time in there, so it is time to bring out its beauty!
Living Room Before
The couch was one of the first things we bought for our house. Yes, we are aware it is too large for this room. However, Colin and I are not pint sized, and we wanted to be comfortable while watching movies, reading, hanging out, etc. Sometimes I agree to function over beauty! The major problem with the large couch is that we have other bulky furniture in the room as well. The TV console is huge, the leather chair is quite large, and the entry table is visually big. All the furniture, aside from the couch, was from our previous apartments. It’s all fine, but it doesn’t really work well together. The visual bulk of the furniture in this room is overwhelming.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the blue-grey that the sellers painted the house is awful. It’s not their fault. They most likely heard that neutral gray homes sell more quickly. But either way, it sucks the light and life out of every room and I cannot WAIT to paint the living room. We have a gorgeous picture window that should make the room light and airy, but the wall color ruins it. Fortunately the living room/dining room is the only space in the house that we haven’t painted yet. We are beyond ready to be rid of this color forever!
Fall Refresh Plans
I’m calling this makeover a “Fall Refresh” because I drew a lot of inspiration for the room from Fall. The colors, the patterns, and the feeling. Think less pumpkins and more terra cotta, cozy textiles, and coppers. Although starting September 1st there will absolutely be pumpkins decorating the house! I will attempt to achieve this look through paint, changing up the tables, and switching the color palette. Below is the amateur mock-up of the room with details about each of the elements.
What is staying the same? The couch, leather chair, coffee table, and end table will stay in this room. What is changing? The rug, console table, entry table, and colors will change. As you can see, we currently have a blue color palette in the room, but I’d like it to skew more green for the living room makeover for Fall. There are a few reasons for this. 1. The kitchen is going to have green accents when we remodel. 2. Green is a warmer color and this room could use some warmth. 3. Green is both mine and Colin’s favorite color. The walls will be painted a warm white and we will bring in greens and oranges through textiles or decorative accents.
Living Room Refresh To Do List
Furniture
It wouldn’t be a Holladays at Home makeover if it didn’t involve Colin building something! For this room he will be building both a new entry table and a TV “shelf”. Both of these new pieces will be visually lighter than the current furniture we have. The TV shelf will be inspired by this post by Francois et Moi. I really love how she managed to work around a TV so it is no longer the center of the room. Having a narrow shelf painted the same color as the walls will take up much less space than our current media console. The entryway table will be inspired by this Crate and Barrel table that I have been obsessed with for years. YEARS. The price tag is just too steep to justify, so Colin is going to make it and I will attempt to stencil it. Stay tuned for that project! I adore the record player, but it will look much better in the basement.
Decor
This entire room design started because I stumbled upon this dhurrie rug. I haven’t stopped thinking about it for over a month. When I obsess over something for that long, it means I should just buy it. The color and design are perfect. The same thing happened with this lamp from cb2. However, I will not be paying almost $500 for a lamp, no matter how much I love it. I bought a similar looking lamp that I’ll be DIYing to look like the cb2 one! We already have the art print, rust blanket, and lamp below. They will work really well in this room. Other decor will include our plants, throw pillows, and books.
Wow, this ended up being much longer than I anticipated! We can’t wait to get started on this living room makeover for Fall. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to watch the process.
