Weekend near Sleepy Hollow
We spent last weekend near Sleepy Hollow, NY and it was the perfect way to kickoff the Halloween season! I personally did not know Sleepy Hollow was a real place which I am choosing to blame on growing up in the Midwest, rather than a lack of geography knowledge 😉 It turned out to be a great place to spend a long Fall weekend!
Pumpkin Blaze
The highlight of the trip was going to the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in Croton-On-Hudson (about 20 minutes north of Sleepy Hollow). This is touted as one of the largest Jack O’Lantern displays in the country with over 7,000 carved pumpkins! It was SO magical. I had a stupid huge smile on my face the entire time we were at the Blaze. Just look at these pumpkin displays –
We camped in Harriman State Park at the Beaver Creek Campground. It was about 30 minutes from Sleepy Hollow, but it was one of the only places to camp in the area. We had a great time hiking, grilling, and having drinks around the fire. Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State park have some excellent hikes. The AT goes through this area, but you can also find trails that branch off. Lots of nice vistas and waterfalls!
Hiking and Camping
Apple Orchard
On Saturday morning we went apple picking at Dr. Davies Farm. This orchard has pick your own, a farm market, and hayrides to pick pumpkins. We loved picking our own apples, but the real highlight was the Apple Cider Donuts. There was a line for these the entire time we were at the orchard and it was for good reason. I’m going to boldly state that these were the best donuts I’ve had in my entire life. For $5 you get 6 hot donuts, freshly made just minutes before. They were HEAVEN in the form of cinnamon-y fried dough. If you’re ever spending a weekend near Sleepy Hollow, you have to stop and get a bag of donuts.
In the afternoon we went into town and explored the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Philipsburg Manor, and an Oktoberfest. The Headless Horseman Bridge was attached to the cemetery and it really made me want to watch the movie! There are lantern tours of the cemetery every weekend in October. We didn’t do one, but they were highly recommended. You can get tickets here . Sleepy Hollow was such a cute town and we really enjoyed wandering in and out of stores after a few beers at their Oktoberfest.
Saturday night was spent sitting around the campfire enjoying a charcuterie board and pumpkin beers. Some may consider this “glamping” rather than camping, but this was my first time and it’s always good to ease into things! Have you spent a weekend near Sleepy Hollow? What were your favorite things to do?
