Bedroom Reveal Filled with DIYs
Coming in a cool 4 months late is our primary bedroom reveal filled with DIYs! For those of you who have been following along, Colin and I started this bedroom makeover for the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge. Due to the combination of an injury and a design overhaul, we dropped out of the challenge. However, we have been determined to finish this room ever since. I’m so relieved and happy to show you all our new bedroom today! But first, let’s take a look at where we started and walk through the design process.
Our whole house was painted grey-blue when we bought it in December 2019. This is a very common paint color for sellers to choose and we are grateful that everything was fresh, but the color is sooooo drab and cold. My original design plan for this room involved a lot of warm tones and layered textiles. I was craving the opposite of boring hospital blue. Below is a picture of our room before starting the makeover and a picture of my first design.
Before
Design
This design was great as a concept. It would probably look fantastic in someone else’s home. But the second we brought in that rug and finished painting the walls, I realized I had made a mistake. I had allowed myself to be influenced by the styles I was seeing all over Instagram rather than staying true to my own style. The earthy toned-down look is very beautiful, but it’s not a good fit for me. So we sold the rug, bought different art, and started scheming new plans. With Colin’s handmade nightstands and headboard in mind, I began playing with colors and design features that would better fit our style and the style of the house. An Instagram poll would later prove that my original design was more popular with the masses 😉 oh well!!
Hello, color!! My original plan for this room was to find mid century modern furniture on Facebook Marketplace to furnish the room. Chicagoland’s marketplace had other ideas in mind. I searched for MONTHS to find a dresser, nightstands, and a headboard. The secondhand furniture market has been very dry since the start of the pandemic, so Colin decided to make our furniture! I also fixed up an old IKEA dresser. He will eventually write a blog post that details his nightstand and headboard plans for all you novice woodworkers out there! With the new furniture plans in mind, I was better able to put together the decor finishes. For anyone participating in a future One Room Challenge, I highly recommend sourcing everything you need before the challenge starts. It will help you avoid major changes to your plans.
Bedroom Reveal Filled with DIYs
It feels so good to have a bedroom that is put together! We have been living in a state of disorder since we moved into the house. One of the before pictures even shows the unfinished drywall from installing a pocket door for the bathroom! Although I am calling this a “reveal”, I will admit that this room isn’t done yet. Haha, sorry Colin! I have a little list of things I would like to do in here, but I am in no rush to get them done. For now, the room feels so fresh and we are so happy to be mostly done. My unfinished list is mostly decor-related. For example, I would like a throw for the bed, new fabric for the bench, and some art for above the bed. I haven’t found anything I love yet, but I’ll update this post in time! Below are the sources we used throughout the room so far.
