Hocus Pocus Halloween Display

Come little children, I’ll take thee away, into my outdoor Hocus Pocus Halloween display! That rhymes, right? Either way, today is reveal day for our Halloween decorations! Since this is the first year in our house, I wanted to do something really unique and special for my favorite holiday. This Hocus Pocus Halloween display was made entirely out of DIY projects and I’m going to show you how to recreate them for your own home!

The Sanderson Sisters

The Sanderson sisters were created using black poster board from Dollar Tree. I used 6 pieces of poster board total. Using an exacto-knife, I cut out the shapes of their heads, then taped those poster boards to the uncut boards. I used leftover paint to paint their hair styles onto each board. You could go as basic or detailed here as you’d like. I chose to stick with just their hair, but you could fully paint each witch onto the boards.

Billy Butcherson

Billy was a late addition to my Hocus Pocus Halloween display because I accidentally stumbled upon a prop from Spencers that has recently sold out. Not only was it unavailable, but it was $80. I love Halloween, but not that much 🙂 DIY saves the day again. I made my Billy prop for $17. What you’ll need: a plain mask, an old suit coat (I got one at the thrift store for $3), lace material (I used a cut up shirt from the thrift store), a black wig, craft paint, and scrap wood. First, use craft paint to paint a creepy zombie face on the white mask. Then screw together two pieces of wood in a T shape. Use this as the “body” and put on his coat. Tie the lace material around his neck. Cut a head shape out of plywood. Attach the mask and wig to the plywood, then drill the plywood into the top of the T-shape wood. Once you stake him in the ground, splatter brown paint and drape faux spiderweb all over Billy’s coat. And you’re done!

Book

Winifred Sanderson’s spell book required its own detailed blog post because it was quite the project. Check out the post here if you want to make your own spell book!

Other Elements

In addition to the main pieces, there were a few other elements that I added to make the scene extra spooky! The witches are standing around a cauldron filled with twinkle lights. There are some tutorials online that show you how to fake a bubbling cauldron, but this is in our living room and I didn’t want to deal with a potential mess. If you are planning to set your scene outdoors, I would highly recommend looking that up. I bought these sheer black curtains to mask our living room and give the illusion that you might be looking into the witches cottage. The graveyard was set up using a few real pumpkins, these skulls from Dollar Tree, and these headstones from Party City. For lighting, I used this spotlight on the graveyard and these purple twinkle lights around the window. The floating witches hats came in a pack of 6 and I strung them up using fishing wire. Finally, I used this flameless flicker candle as the Black Flame Candle. *Note, the prices for the Amazon items seem to be inflated as we are much closer to Halloween. Might want to stock up on the off-season! I paid much less for everything.

A great display doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Plus it’s more fun and a lot more satisfying to know you made it all! Happy Hauntings, my witches and warlocks!
